Structural damage refers to damage that affects the vehicle’s frame or unibody—the rigid skeleton that carries loads and channels crash energy. When these structural members are bent, cracked, or displaced, the vehicle can lose its shape, misalign, and lose its ability to safely absorb impact or maintain proper steering and alignment. That’s why this type of damage is treated as structural: it directly compromises the vehicle’s safety and handling.

Technicians assess it by measuring against factory specifications, checking gaps and fitment of doors and panels, and using frame machines to restore straightness or deciding if a component must be replaced. Cosmetic dents only affect the surface and don’t compromise the frame. Tire or suspension damage pertains to wheels, tires, or suspension parts and isn’t structural in the frame sense. Electrical system damage involves wiring and modules, not the structural integrity of the vehicle.
